Apalachicola Forest Youth Camp was opened in January 2002. AFYC is located near our moderate risk residential program in the middle of the Apalachicola Forest. We have partnered with the Department of Children and Families to provide a Competency Restoration Residential Commitment Program for youth who have been charged with delinquent acts or violations of the law, and have been assessed as “incompetent to proceed with trial” due to a mental illness or mental retardation. The program is a secured facility and provides an intensive array of courses, counseling, and therapies to increase competencies and enable the clients to become knowledgeable about the judicial process and be able to use this information in a meaningful way to make decisions concerning their cases. This program serves both male and female youth from 8 to 18 years of age. The goal is to determine which youth may be restored to competency and assist them into reaching this goal as soon as possible. AFYC is the only residential competency restoration program in the State of Florida.

Apalachicola Forest Youth Camp provides comprehensive programming, evolving around   intensive competency restoration training.  The facility is hardware secure and provides continuous secure custody, care, treatment, and supervision.  The staffing pattern exceeds a minimum staff to youth ratio of one to four (1:4) during the day and one to four (1:4) at night.  Additional staff will ensure coverage for added supervision and training of clients as well as for one-to-one observation of residents with special observation needs.
